National Construction Week October 18-22

September 2010

  • Ocala MAF meeting on September 21st, Kelly Kendall recapped the State Convention at Marion Technical Institute The West Central chapter will hold a NCCER Construction Week Celebration the last week in October. One day will be for Masonry. United Masonry and area suppliers will talk to students and parents about the Masonry Trade.
  • Marsan Carr is scheduling a meeting in Tallahassee to discuss the upcoming legislative session.
  • Derwin Bass of Suwannee Tech is referring two Refractor Masonry Companies in Columbia and Suwannee County to Join MAF
  • Larry Penton of Locklin Tech has moved the NW Apprentice program to Pensacola and is using the Masonry Arts building as their school site, Locklin continues to support the program. This move was to accommodate the apprentices that are still in the program who live in Pensacola. Locklin is committed to keeping the masonry program.
  • Marcobay has five masonry contractors who are interested in joining the MAF program in Lakeland. AMS will participate in the Lakeland program. George Milliken, Mary Jane Mueller and Joyce Rivas will work to coordinate a meeting date in October. A thank you letter was written to the Director of Traviss, Dr Clinton and John Smalls regarding the two students that helped with the state conveniton contest. The students came back and have created excitement about masonry with the other students.
  • An informal survey was done with the NCCER Schools. Over fifty instructors are interested in participating in the OSHA 500 Class. Workforce training funds will be explored.
  • Saint Augustine area Perkins Educator from Saint Johns County School District will submit the OSHA 500 Curriculum to be reviewed and be placed on the 2011 – 20012 Perkins Training Approval List to support training costs for the ICTP Certify Instructors with DOE.
  • The Masonry Class in Callahan at West Nassau’s High School has 20 + students
  • Menendez Green Ticket Booth will be completed by October 13th and will be dedicated on Friday, October 15 at their Homecoming Football game.

On Saturday September 18, the Masonry Association of Florida held its 13th Annual State Apprentice Contest in Saint Petersburg at the Sirata Beach Resort. There were 15 contestants from the MAF Chapters through out the State. The top two finishers from each year contests will go to Chattanooga on October 23 to represent Florida in the BIA/SE Manpower Forum Regional Masonry Contest.

The winning mason apprentices were:

1st Year:

2nd Year:
